What Is A Prism
By the end of this lesson, you will be able to
- define prism.
- interpret the surface area of prism.
- derive the formula for the volume of prism.
Prism
A prism is a polyhedron whose base and top are two congruent parallel polygons and other faces are parallelogram. A prism is a polyhedron with two congruent polygonal bases.
A prism showing its base, faces and edges.
Types of Prism
There are several type of prism like
- regular prism
- irregular prism
- right prism
- oblique prism
Regular Prism
A regular prism is a prism in which the base is a regular polygon. The regular prisms are mostly used in our daily life.
Irregular Prism
A prism is said to be irregular if the base is a irregular polygon.
An irregular prism showing its faces and edges.
Regular Prism Example
Right Prism
A prism is said to be right prism if the lateral faces and their joining edges are perpendicular to the base faces. Therefore, the lateral faces are rectagles for a right prism.
Oblique Prism
An oblique prism is a prism in which the lateral faces and joining edges are not perpendicular to the base faces. Therefore, the lateral faces are parallelograms for an oblique prism.
A right prism showing its faces and edges.
